    Humane refers to "having qualities befitting human beings."  It's about the object that is acting, not the object being acted upon.  (Also, what we should do based on what we are.)

    We shouldn't.  We should be respectful of life.  The use of the word humane in reference to animals is just incorrect but you know the masses, once they hear it on NBC they assume it's in the dictionary.  What a disappointment!
