You could do a whole lot worse that bending an elbow with a glass of Tullamore Dew. It's a fine Irish whiskey that I think is better than the two more well known brands: Jameson's or Bushmills (which are both very good too, in their own ways). A friend with deep ties with the Emerald Isle turned me on to that particular imbibement way back before it was easy to find in the States.
Still, I've got a soft spot in my heart for fine single-malt Scotches. Even The Macallan's 25-year old at around $1,500/bottle is pretty darn tasty. Had a chance to sample a glass in Vegas one time (at $75/shot, on my company's dime) and it was REALLY nice.
You were lucky to be able to sample a glass of such an expensive scotch. Yes, if I were forced to drink whiskey now, Tullamore Dew is my drink of choice. When I used to drink hard liquor straight, that was my go to brand of whiskey. Used to play cards for shots of the stuff. Nice and smooth finish.
