I've never had a home destroyed. But after the Angora Fire at Lake Tahoe in 2007, many people rebuilt their homes in the exact same spots. It's a show of resilience, I guess. Also, as far as wildfires go, any place is prone to a wildfire. So a new unburned spot isn't necessarily any safer.
