When a political lawyer is being questioned and gets a lawyer to advise him does that lawyer subject himself to being investigated too?

How dangerous is association with potential criminals? How safe is it to take on a notorious person/situation for the taker onner?  Is there automatic protection or do you just roll  the dice and take your chances?
