Why would a lawyer retain a lawyer? Isn't that admitting he or she is inadequate/incompetent/ineffective?

If you're not good enough to defend yourself why would anyone have any confidence that you could defend him/her? Makes no sense to me. Who would be hiring a lawyer who needed to hire a lawyer to protect himself/herself? Seriously?
