How can I grind my coffee beans without a coffee grinder?

I haven't replaced my coffee grinder that caught on  fire yet, and probably won't for a few more days. How can I grind up the beans without one? I tried beating the tar out of a ziplock bag of them using a rolling pin, but the coffee came out weak. :/

    Would a cheese grater work?

Umm... I'm guessing you mean some kind of electric deal, but right now I'm envisioning me holding a tiny bean and running it across a hand grater repeatedly until my fingers get bloody. I'm not that desperate yet. lol

I would just chew them before doing that one.

Definately not using bare hands to do that. LOL

I honestly don't know. Can you like, throw them in a magic bullet? :/ Also, I'm sorry for your loss but the fact that your previous grinder caught on fire made me giggle a bit. Hope it wasn't a scary situation!

lol No, it wasn't bad. I was holding it and realized it was smoking, so I unplugged it and sat it in my sink until it was done. I don't have a magic bullet. I have an ultra tiny chopper, but it's intended for onions and I have a big food processor with a spinning cheese grater blade, but I don't think it's strong enough to stand up to the beans.

Try a blender or an osterizer or something that cuts stuff up with a motor.

    Or...

Put in a paper bag or plastic bag and hammer them to pulverize.

That's what I was trying to do with the rolling pin, but I couldn't make it fine enough. I wonder if I have a big mallet or something.

Many stores here have a grinder. Try one of those. Also, my sister has a coffee maker with a built in grinder.

I had a coffee maker like that, but it was super expensive and died after four months of use. I'll eventually run down to Target or WalMart and get one. I just don't want to take my kids with me and my daytime hours are kind of sacred for working.

Maybe you need one of those spiky mallet things?

Ooh... I don't have one- I think you mean a meat tenderizer. Not a bad idea though.

Just buy the cans that are pre-ground. They would only last two days for you anyway.

I usually do, but I got on a fresh-ground kick a couple weeks ago and stocked up on whole-bean at Costco. lol

Oh, please!  You have got to be kidding us, just let it go already, get the monkey off of your back.  You can go a few weeks without guzzling that putrid bilge-water.  Don't act as if coffee is all that important.
