Just how important are metal umlauts (röck döts)?

Would Blue Öyster Cult, Mötley Crüe, Motörhead etc be just as bada$$ without them?

Those are actual letters in some languages, and they usually apply to babies, fuzzy animals, and such examples of cuteness. In those languages, Mötley Crüe would sound like Mertley Cree.

I know that, I speak German. Metal umlauts are purely for effect, however.

Well, I was going to say 'Only if speak Deutsche.' but you kinda spoilt it. Don't you hate it when some English speaking people mispronounce  names like Weinstein? I studied Deutsche for a while and I kinda cringe when I here that. My son in law's surname is Beil and they pronounce it Biel. I am used to it, I guess.

Makes your bile rise when they mispronounce it, huh?

  • As a linguist, "metal umlauts" seem rather ridiculous to me. That's why I love Spinal Tap, for putting an umlaut diacritic over the letter "n".
