Discussion»Questions»Life and Society» Poodle skirts. Hula Hoops. Beanie Babies. FADS. Do fads have a standard shelf-life? Are you obsessive about a current fad? What and why?
Some do some don't. Fashion fads will always come and go. Other things like Pokemon seem to linger forever....they came out in the 1990s and are still big.
Currently, I am not obsessed with a fad. I do think there is a shelf life for fads, it depends on how the item is marketed, if it is saturated too much, people can lose interest or not need it anymore: the snuggie: there was a snuggie for your sports team, favorite color, almost anything you wanted, then people stop buying them. I can't think of any NEW fads for adults. I'm going to give my experience with some of the fads with children because I have a 10 year old son and 5 year old daughter. Also, I am a Elementary school teacher. About 6 years ago, there were silly bands. They came in little bags and you could get all shapes, sports teams, Disney characters... One bag cost $6.00! Children traded them at school. Then, you started seeing them in discount bins for .99
Another fad that is still out there but I don't think as popular as it was when it first came out was the rainbow loom/wonder loom. There are different colored little rubber bands that you put on a plastic loom and make jewlery- rings, braclets....I like this fad because I was able to do it with my son. We still sit down at the table and make bracelets and rings together. It's an activity that children can express themselves and be creative.
Pokémon go was popular awhile ago. My son wasn't into it- he doesn't have a cell phone, so I don't know much about that fad, but all I heard were negative things, people not paying attention to what they were doing. It seemed to lose popularity quickly.
The figit is popular right now. It is everywhere. It is licensed by most companies. The owners were marketing that it could help children with autism but that claim is not proven to work. Who knows how long the figit will be around.

You totally overwhelmed me ally! WOW! Thank you so much for going to all this trouble and investing so much thought and time to really giving me a superduper reply. I have only heard of Pokemon. I didn't know the others existed! The graphics are so colorful. So you're a teacher and a mom? Well your school kids and your real-life kids are very lucky to have you! Thank you for your nifty reply and Happy Monday! :)
