Isn't it redundant to state that something can stand alone on its own?

Great can be an adjective to describe when something is above normal:
" chocolate ice cream is great !"

Great  can be a noun - " the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, all the greats"

Great can be an adverb - very well,  " we sounded awful, they sounded great"
