    Isn't it redundant to state that something can stand alone on its own?

    Great can be an adjective to describe when something is above normal:
    " chocolate ice cream is great !"

    Great  can be a noun - " the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, all the greats"

    Great can be an adverb - very well,  " we sounded awful, they sounded great"
