How are endangered species kept as pets by irresponsible animal lovers any better off? Effects on individual animals do not translate to effects on the overall condition of the species. Would you then have them extinct in the wild but you may still see some at Joe Blo millionaire's house? This post was edited by O-uknow at October 25, 2017 10:08 AM MDT

Our zoo had a years long program to reproduce a rare African frog. They were returned to the wild.

Only if they can successfully and safely be returned to the wild.

A "pet" wild animal can pretty much never be returned to the wild and survive.

    No, that's usually not possible.

And keeping wild animals as "pets" is generally illegal in the USA (there are some exceptions but those require obtaining a permit on a case-by-case basis, and then the animal is generally judged unfit to return to the wild for other reasons).

And keeping endangered wild animals as pets, or migratory animals as pets is prohibited by Federal law.
