Do you think subtitles on TV help young ones to read and spell
I have the TV volume just low enough to hear and switch subtitles on I think it subconsciously teaches young ones spelling and reading or even attention to subject maybe. What do you think? THE BRAIN PERCEIVES MORE THAN THE EYE CAN SEE!
I think the best way to teach children to read and spell is with books. Subtitles don't stay up long enough for them to focus on the words. When they read a book, they can spend as much time as needed on the words. I also find subtitles very distracting. You're too busy looking at them to watch the acting.
I know a women who learned the English language by watching movies in English with Flemish (her language) subtitles. She spoke very good English. She took a class in the evenings later to learn how to write in English. It amazed me. I watch foreign films with English subtitles sometimes and I pick up a word or two if used over and over in the film, but I lose it within about seven minutes. :)
