  • My heroes are people like Ghandi, Nelson Mandela, Aung San Suu Kyi, Paolo Friere, Peter Singer, and a fair few others.

All of them are either older than I am now (60) or were much older than I am when they died.

    Who are your heroes?

  • She's the head of the party for democracy in Burma.

After being elected to run the country, the military junta staged a coup and kept her under house arrest for over twenty years. This meant, for various reasons, separation from her husband and children, and isolation from most friends and allies.

As a Buddhist, she campaigned for peace, law, freedom of speech and democracy throughout that time and was avoid the Nobel Prize for Peace.

Recently, to end the international trade embargo on Burma, the military finally allowed a national election. She won an avalanche victory.

Her party is now helping to end the persecution of minority groups, along with many other reforms.

But due to a set of laws that allows only a member of the military to be president and which disallows women from participating in the military, she is unable to rule.

To ensure that her party and its principles had a chance, she gave her position to a military man who rules in her stead and represents the party's policies.

Her acceptance speech for the Nobel Prize for Peace is one of the most inspiring I've ever heard. It penetrates deeply into the meaning of freedom and what is required to achieve it.
