Discussion»Statements»Rosie's Corner» Any of you Native American? Is "Pocahantas" offensive to you or is there nothing wrong with calling someone that? Are you a Trump supporter?
It isn't a word I would use to describe anyone Native American or otherwise. I believe the use of that word in the context of presenting honors upon the Native American code talkers was completely inappropriate and out of place.
I don't call people names and expect them to LIKE it.
That just sets the tone immediately. It is aggressive and impolite. To spin it sarcatsticly and then denigrate a race, is just the next step.
I may think Pocahontas is an Indian Princess and not get why you are offended. But that is the POINT. I didn't care to ask and find out your point of view when I addressed you as such.
This is rude at best and racist at worst.

What I am interested in learning is whether Native Americans find the use of the name offensive and if so in what context? Do you have any Native American ancestors Sharon? Thank you for your reply.
I know m'dear. What I don't know is whether Native Americans find the use of the name offensive in any context? Thank you for your reply and Happy Wednesday! :)
This is a quote from the link I posted in my response to your question:
In May the National Congress of American Indians said in a statement: “The name of Pocahontas should not be used as a slur, and it is inappropriate for anyone to use her name in a disparaging manner.”
Thank you for that tom. Now I know. Well of course with the Donald John he exults in being an obnoxious jacka**! He is so good at it. SIGH. Thank you for the detailed info. I appreciate it! :)
I am a Trump supporter. I do have some Native American in my background. Not enough to make the claim of being Native American. My granddaughter is 1/4 Native American. No, I do not find President Trump use of the term Pocahontas as racist or offensive. I do find it offensive that Warren lied and used that minority status to advance her education and career.
If one isn't Native-American, of course, you won't think it's a racial slur. Just like some Caucasians don't think the "N" word is racist. Regardless, someone or a few on this website actually think that the "Pocahantas" thing is no big deal. That just cries out, I'm Caucasian!!!"
It's not a racial slur when you are using it to call out someone who lied about being a Native American. Your comment has more racial overtones and judgement of race than calling Warren that.
It's ignorant, inappropriate, and racially insensitive where it was said, but it wasn't used as a racial slur.
If that's what you got to tell yourself, so be it. Just consider the mouth it came out of.
