    No ideas, but your EXACT story matches what my late husband saw in Atlanta in the late 70s. Strange but true.

    Phoenix has so many airports, plus a military test reservation southwest of town, that I would not give a moment's notice to any odd lights in the sky. Except that one time I saw lights dropping dropping dropping without ever going up. I stopped the car and watched until I realized that was on the military test site and they were dropping magnesium flares.

    STOP scaring them away!  They aren't good drivers anyway.  You  know how many times they have crashed?

    Yes carbon, I have.  More than once and in different states... geographically and in my mind.
