O'Reilly's a jerk for sure, but a lot of people think that M. Obama was opening a can of worms that's got nothing to do with nothing. By even bringing that up, puts racism out there and was just not a classy thing to do.

She has made an interesting point about the White House. However, if she is so offended, the O'bamas can afford to live in another house if they choose.

Lie. Bill O'Reilly did NOT discredit Michelle Obama in any way, nor did he in any way deny the White House was built with slave labor. In fact, he called Michelle Obama "essentially correct". Let us focus on exactly what he said, and not what someone told you he said, or what you are making-up of what he said.

BILL O’REILLY: "Slaves that worked there were well fed and had decent lodgings provided by the government, which stopped hiring slave labor in 1802. However, the feds did not forbid subcontractors from using slave labor. So Michelle Obama is essentially correct in citing slaves as builders of the White House, but there were others working, as well."

If you do your research, you would find out that there are actually many government and historical structures, including presidential homes, that were built at least in part by slave labor. That includes the railroads that move the fuel that provides your electricity. If you truly, righeously, unconditionally, and unhypocritically abhorred slave labor and its ill-gotten fruits, you would shut off your power and not use the computer with which you posted this thread.

Re: "..unconditionally, and unhypocritically abhorred slave labor and its ill-gotten fruits"

So, you admit you are an unhypocritical happy beneficiay of the ill-gotten fruits of slave labor?

Does that mean that if anyone claims "I never owned slaves" you will shout that person down and point out what a hypocrite he or she is being because he or she is also a beneficiary of the ill-gotten fruits of slavery and Jim Crow?

That would be a refreshing change from you, given that you have largely sided with the We Live In An Awesom Post-Racial Society crowd to date.

But I'm not holding my breath....;-D...

I don't think BillO attacked Michelle Obama.

Instead, his "history lesson" was an attempt to mitigate and diffuse the implications of Mrs. Obama's observation about living every day in a house built with slave labor.

If people take Obama's  observation to heart, they might start looking elsewhere in society to what other structures and institutions were shaped by slavery and institutional racism. They might question if we really do live in an Awesom Post Racial Society where legacy and opportunity are somewhat fairly distributed.

And, of course, the "Let's blame minorities for their struggles" Vast Right-Wing Echo Chamber can't have that.

Because he is a moron, as Al Franken most eloquently stated during the Democratic Convention.

Though he’s a former Saturday Night Live star and comedy writer, the Minnesota senator tends to avoid humor on the job. But on Monday, he couldn’t resist delivering a standup routine in Philadelphia.

    Story Continued Below

Franken introduced himself as a “world renowned expert on right wing megalomaniacs: Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly, and now, Donald Trump.”

(Two of Franken’s books skewered the conservative hosts: “Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot” and “Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them.”)

His credential for critiquing the Republican nominee was his “doctorate from megalomania studies from Trump University,” Franken said.

“Did you know that Trump University’s School of Ripping People Off is ranked second in the nation right behind Bernie Madoff University,” Franken added.

He mocked Trump’s contention that his business successes make him qualified to be president: “If you believe that, I’ve got some delicious Trump Steaks to sell you,” Franken said, before taking a more serious tone.

Somebody claiming to be Senator Al Franken used to show up on Answerbag. He would disappear when I went after him politically.

I couldn't disagree with you more! Thank you for your reply BSurf and Happy Monday. Nothing ever gets solved if you refuse to talk about it. Racism is a problem Those who say talking about racism is racist are beyond the pale and the only words I have for them will get me banned from Answermug possibly forever so use your imagination and then multiply it by a zillion times  ten and you might get a clue.

Of course (as she slaps her forehead with the open palm of her right hand). Natcherly! It's good for rating and ratings is good for O'Reilly. It helps him jack up his salary. Thank you for your reply Uc!  :)

Mahalo for your reply OS. I disagree. He  implied she lied. That's how I took it anyway. Did you ever read the book Al Franken wrote about him and others like him years ago when Senator Franken was "just" a very witty and insightful comedian? It was a hoot and a holler!  Happy Monday! :)

I know. I cherished every word Senator Franken uttered as I cherished every word Sarah Silverman said. Franken is a treasure. O'Reilly is a dam* fool who continues to embarrass himself. Thank you for your reply Sharonna and Happy Monday! :)

O'Reilly did not attack Mrs Obama. He said she was correct. And gave more details into the building of the White House.

"As we mentioned Talking Points memo, Michelle Obama referenced slaves building the White House in referring to the evolution of America in a positive way. It was a positive comment. The history behind her remark is fascinating. George Washington selected the site in 1791, and as president laid the cornerstone in 1792. Washington was then running the country out of Philadelphia. Slaves did participate in the construction of the White House. Records show about 400 payments made to slave masters between 1795 and 1801. In addition, free blacks, whites, and immigrants also worked on the massive building. There were no illegal immigrants at that time. If you could make it here, you could stay here. In 1800, President John Adams took up residence in what was then called the executive mansion. It was only later on they named it the White House. But Adams was in there with Abigail and they were still hammering nails. The construction was still going on. Slaves that worked there were well fed and had decent lodgings provided by the government, which stopped hiring slave labor in 1802. However, the Feds did not forbid subcontractors from using slave labor. So Michelle Obama is essentially correct in citing slaves as builders of the White House but there were others working as well.”

Thank you for your reply m2c. So O'Reilly spoke up and out to defend her critics then by giving a history lesson so they would shut up and leave her alone? Odd.

He was being asked by people if it was true. Others were claiming it was a lie. He cleared it up. And as you can see from the quote above yes defended her saying she was correct. I don't find it odd. O'Reilly deals in facts and the facts were on Obama's side.

I read the speech she made and can see NO reason in hell why she'd even mention that.......it has nothing to do with anything......the past is past.....and as someone else said, she could live anywhere she wants; why not check into a Red Roof Inn? LOL......

and if the reparations crowd REALLY wants to do something, then let them track down the DESCENDANTS OF ALL THE SLAVEOWNERS AND GET THEM TO PAY SOMETHing.

SEE how stupid even that sounds?  pay for what? something that happened years ago that at the time was not thought to be a 'bad' thing?????????

and how much should it be? and even if it happens, WHICH IT WON'T!!!.........when the money's paid out, then what?

TOTALLY STUPID ALL THE WAY AROUND.....let it alone!!!!!!!!!!!
