How is it possible that a Saudi Prince bought a religious image of Jesus (“Salvador Mundi”, when Islam doesn’t allow it?

The painting was sold at an auction by Christie’s. No one knew who had bought the $450.73 million painting, painted by Leonardo Da Vinci . It is one of only 15 surviving ones. Journalists have been reporting that this is strange for many reasons. One was that Jesus is a religious image, as he is considered a messenger and a prophet. However, this painting is going to the Louvre Abu Dhabi. Apparently, it is acceptable. So what is the rule about buying religious art in Muslim countries?!

    1. First I think we can agree that just because "Islam doesn’t allow it" doesn't mean that no Muslim will do it. There are many things that Islam doesn't allow, like taking innocent life, robbery, dishonesty, injustice, oppression, alcohol, drugs but you're guaranteed to find some Muslims somewhere doing one or more of those forbidden things.

    2. There are many things that fall in the grey area between allowed and prohibited. The depiction of living beings in art is one such thing.

    3. Unanimity on the prohibition of images of God's prophets and messengers, like Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus or Mohammed, is much stronger. Part of the reason here is the danger of the possible veneration of, and paying respect to, such images.

    4. Islamic requires that general ethical and moral considerations also be taken into account. It might be difficult to objectively justify such a large sum of money in terms of cost and benefit to society.
