I remember my first pet was a rat named Polly. My mother always wanted a rat, but her mother wouldn't let her have one. So when I wanted a pet of my own, she got me a rat as a special gift and helped me take care of her and taught me how to care for my little critters.

That's a first for me Patch. A female like your very own mom wanting to be anywhere near a rat? So was it cuddly and loving and cute and sweet? Of course I get attached to the little baby lizard critters that skitter along on our patio or up the wall. I talk to them and say hi. A rat? Oh wait a minit. Mickey Mouse is like that. OK.  I'm good with it. Just like I like spiders now after I saw that adorable movie Charlotte's Web and fell in love with  Charlotte! Thank you for your reply! :) This post was edited by RosieG at December 11, 2017 6:05 AM MST

Polly was a very sweet little lady. My mother loves all critters, even bugs. She told me about a time she was first dating my dad and he killed a spider right in front of her and she went ballistic and screeched at him. He never did anything like that again. She has quite the banshee shriek...

That really impresses me about your mom. Thou Shalt Not Kill I think extends to all living creatures or should. I've been very bad in my past. Jim likes to save spiders and crickets and grasshoppers so we capture them with a glass and he slides a small piece of cardboard under the glass and then we take the critter outside and he releases it. Then it's on its own. Ants are not so lucky nor are roaches. We had a problem years ago with both. Haven't seen any for a few years. I think maybe the word got out they weren't welcome here. Your mom has/had a loving heart for all living things. You have her genes. Lucky you! :)  Thank you for the further sharing Patch. I love it! :)

You should be a vet m'dear. Seriously. Our granddaughter is like you. Many different kinds of animals for pets. She used to work for a vet and considered becoming one but she got married and had kids so those plans got pushed aside. But they have two acres up in Oregon and many animals  and her kids are taking card of them too. Did you ever consider being a veterinarian? Thank you for sharing that info with us. We had a Cocker Spaniel named Blackie and my sister had 3 goldfish. Anastasia, Fantasia and I can't remember the name of the 3rd one. I'm more a cat person so all I've had as an adult are cats. I'm growing kinda fond of the lizards in our backyard who scamper up the wall though. Weird isn't it? But they're so darn cute. :)

      (Its name.)
    No apostrophe.

Allergies or no allergies, not every child automatically wants the same thing just because you assume it should be so. Quit trying to homogenize everyone into your myopic vision of who they should be and how they should think. People have the right to be different without some dictatorial, regimented thought process being shoved down their throats.
