Having not seen any of the Star Wars movies really could I just go watch the new one? Like would I be lost as far as storyline or not?

They said on tv that you don't have to have watched the others to know what's going on. The movie stands on it's own.

I am not a star wars fan---I only went to the first one.

But I heard on the radio the other day that this latest starts quickly with characters that were introduced in the previous episode of the series and the "reviewer" suggested seeing the one prior to this before seeing the latest one.

  • Thanks.
I watched the new Star Trek movies and I liked them a lot.
I'm not sure but I think J.J.Abrams who made the Star Trek films also has been doing the new Star Wars ones?
If that's true I may have to check them out.
I thought Star Trek Beyond was cool so I may like the Star wars stuff.
    Thanks.

    You're welcome.

I live in North Texas---I think some theaters are running both movies so people can see both if they want to.  That's a lot of time sitting still though.

  • Yeah, no kidding.
I guess I need a woman who's seen all the Star Wars movies to go with me to the new one and she could just whisper anything that I might not understand so I could get through it.

    I live in Alberta.
Nice to meet you Tom Jackson from North Texas. : )

Nice to meet you also.  I used to live in Montana as a child.  We used to vacation around Banff / Lake Louise occasionally.

I guess a woman like that might work.  Or let her see the new one first and get her opinion of what you need to do.

Considering that Disney totally screwed the storyline with episode 7, don't bother.

  • So are you saying that the story line is kind of irrelevant now, just go for the action?

I'm saying don't bother to go at all. Disney could have run with the EU and made some thrilling original movies. Instead they decided to do a lame remake of Episode IV and waste Carrie Fisher's last effort.

You need to take a day or two and binge watch episodes 4-7 to fully understand.
If you want to, you can watch all episodes, but 4-7 will be enough :) This post was edited by ally at December 15, 2017 4:12 PM MST

  • Thank you.
You must really know a lot about Star Wars.
I guess I've got some work to do before I can watch this movie huh?
    Umm....which one is episode 4?

Star Wars Episode 4 - A New Hope was the first movie that was released (It came out in 1977). It was written and directed by George Lucas.
Star Wars Episode 4 is the second-highest-grossing film of all time in Canada and the US (178,119,600 estimated admissions).

  • Thanks.
Would me already knowing that Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's father ruin that movie for me?
Like would it spoil it or is it so much more than that?

I would recommend watching Rogue One first. But I can see watching this without it. It can stand alone.
I have only seen the original 2 and Rogue One....we just watched the new one. I had no problems.
My son is a Star Wars fan and he likes it but was disappointed by a couple of scenes that he thought should have been more.  But I liked it.
