Do you understand the etymology of the word “understand”?

Why isn’t the word abovestand?

    In verbal contract law it means to stand under someone's authority.  Best to use "I get where you are coming from."  "I see what you're saying."

    Sounds like some of my questions. 'Abovestand' sounds awkward. 'Overstand' sounds better. I shall start using it.
