Is doing almost everything not in your best interest to gain an acceptance always out of reach a sign of deep seated mental illness?

I think its definitely a sign of a personality disorder, which was recognized as a mental illness in the early 1980s.

  • Why would people be more accepting of someone that is self destructive?

  • This is usually diagnosed as a personality disorder.
With autism or asperger's, the source of the problem is physical, neurological.
But there could be a multitude of reasons: having grown up in a different culture; ice or drug addiction; Korsakoff's syndrome, dementia, or brain damage; or growing up in a family which did not show empathy and consideration or set clear boundaries.

When the cause is unknown, one can still guess that it's due to a lack of understanding of which behaviours are acceptable and attractive.

There has never been a human society that did not have strong codes of conduct and speech.
Being a social species, we depend on these codes in order to be able to get along well together.

Fortunately, if the person really wants to know how to gain acceptance and develop good relationships, the skills are learnable.
