Why was it such a big deal that Colon hit his first home run? The announcers sounded to me like they were surprised the man could do anything right. And the entire team left the dugout?
(I am not a baseball follower at all, so I'm incredibly out of the loop if this is all stuff I should know.)

I don't even know what a dinger is - - I figure it's a home run. :)
Because Colon was a fat 42-year-old pitcher and a notoriously bad hitter, and it was his first homer in a career that started in 1997. He hit it in his 20th season when he was by far the oldest active player in MLB. Most players are finished by their mid-to-late 30s.
