When and why did humans start wiping?

When and why did humans start wiping or manually cleaning themselves post-defecation, since animals generally don't do this?

    Generally not, you are right Stu, but some dogs are renowned 'scooters' are they not? (I am assuming the term is in common use where you are - well, not common perhaps, but at very least, occasionally heard).
    But an excellent question nevertheless, and one that absolutely demands an authoritative answer. I wait with bated breath . . . . . .
