First, they had the ongoing debate over the Viet Nam war. Then they had riots in big cities. My buddy Curt was living in downtown Detroit that summer of '68, and went up on his apartment buildings' roof to escape the heat. (no AC)  He saw the riot fires and heard the whizzing bullets.

Some say???  I believe anyone in their right mind would say that the riots of '67-68 were worse.

  • I agree, the 67/68 riots were much worse than what we have now. The two largest cities in MI, Grand Rapids and Detroit, were war zones. Especially Detroit. My brother was in the National Guard and was stationed in Detroit. He said the bullets were zinging all around their heads. Sad thing is, they were allowed to carry their rifles but no ammo. Who in their right mind would give such an order? Didn't last long though. Another order was given to fully load and arm themselves and to shoot to kill if necessary. I would imagine the military, law enforcement, and innocent bystanders getting shot had something to do with it.

The outlying towns and villages were barricaded to keep out the rioters and to protect the residents. No one was allowed in. The police knew who I was and they wouldn't let me in. Politically, America has always been divided. Nothing new there. Yes you have the wannabe groups like ANTIFA that cause trouble but they were and are quickly quelled. Not so with the riots. If you actually think that this political divide is worse than the riots then perhaps you should study your history. This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at January 25, 2018 9:33 AM MST
