No it cannot. Though it does effectively lend it, by fiat, in certain circles. Politics, business, finance, entertainment, academia, science, and art among them.
You mean superficially. A patina that develops over time. Yes. Well there are multitudes of folks who worship money and by extension worship those who have it. Character/integrity be dam*ed! If ya got the money you get their respect and devotion and attention and in fact you OWN them. They are AWED and whatever despicable things the obscenely wealthy do is okay with them. SIGH. Not sure just what your definitions of "class" and "white trash" are. And should point out that the phrase as far as I know is only used of white people. Some people in the south would have been, or perhaps still would be, insulted by such a designation. Others now (including some of my relations on my father's side) refer to themselves as that or as "trailer trash" and are proud of it. Generally I think though not a polite thing to say or call anyone. By referring to others as "trash" so we make ourselves just feel better about ourselves? I don't really think so. There are all kinds of people in this world living the best lives they are capable of and I think much better to respect them and behave in a friendly manner to them than try to excoriate them with epithets or call them demeaning names.
I find your humanity refreshing. But think for a minute, what word would you use to characterize the type of people described in Sharonna’s reply? Unproductive, indifferent people. Willful burdens to society. Ne’er do wells and proud of it.
Maybe your word isn’t ”trash”, because you are so admirably polite. Can I guess you wouldn't use “classy”, “winners” or “Role models”?

Well I wouldn't say my Southern relatives who are proud to label themselves thus are "burdens to society" though I may not care for much of what they do. Nor are they unproductive or indifferent. They just enjoy their lives in a different way than I do or some of our other relatives do.
Did not read Sharonna's answer until just now and she seems to have it in for Sarah Palin who I used to think was fairly clever. "White trash"? - No way. We are not into hunting but I would not excoriate others if they choose to indulge in it.
That isn’t the question. It wasn’t my intent to describe your relatives in particular, but to classify people who fit the description as we’ve outlined.
When others describe a group of people as “trash”, since you find this word unsuitable, what term do YOU prefer to characterize the kind of people who are —to use an old term— low company?
I'm sorry, guess I didn't understand. I know there are some who might consider ME "low company" but I think so be it. To me they are just people choosing to live their lives in a different manner from the way we choose to live ours. That is all - no judgment necessary.
Donjohn Trump is white trash in my opinion. He trashes everyone and everything all the time. He is a congenital LIAR 24/7. He is selfish and boorish and arrogant and led by the nose currently by Stephen Miller and John Kelley, two ALT-RIGHT WHITE Nationalists who took over for Steven Bannon. You mean provide you a much larger stage on which to parade them? Yes. That is certainly true. People with a lot of money are paid attention to/listened to by multitudes. Money speaks every language very articulately even though person with tons of it is uneducated(degrees don't count..you can buy them too), inarticulate, boorish and empty of any original thoughts. To equate someone with trash, that someone has to meet the criteria of not caring at all about anyone, and usually that includes their kids and themselves. They are just existing, usually drunk or on drugs, stealing, lying and abusing. Those are white trash.
The people that do not WANT to improve. Even if they have a chance to improve. Those people.
And there is NO way of tellling beforehand where something like that will manifest. There are rich white trash people like Sara Palin who thinks the outdoors is her playground to trash and kill any animal that she chooses.
Nothing is worse trash than that moron. She leaves half-dead animals in her wake after firing on them for a reality TV show. I mean what rung in hell is lower than the one she resides on?

Doofus don is a prime example of what I mean. He was born to wealth. He was "educated" at the finest schools he says (though everyone knows you can buy your way to a Ph.d if you've the money and still be dumb as a brick wall). He is a walking ego that cares only about what will benefit him. The way he speaks is extremely trashy. He surrounds himself with people who are trash simply because they support/defend/protect and lie for him. He leaves trash in his wake. He trashes everyone and everything. SIGH. Your question raises another question in my mind. Is there such a thing as black trash? I've never heard that asked before. I'm betting someone would jump up and down yelling racism.

If the person of color is born to wealth, egotistical and boorish and cold-hearted and a compulsive liar. Someone who trashes people and trashes institutions and trashes history and trashes tradition and trashes protocol and trashes the Constitution and turns everything he touches into trash. He leaves trash in his wake. It is his legacy. As for Racism it is everywhere. The problem we the people have currently is that an obscenely wealthy evil ignorant person who is trashy in every sense of the word is the prez.
