Not sure. The developer obviously thought it was beneficial. It's an easy fix if you don't want to see stuff though. Just go to the group's main page, find your name under the Muggers/Members tab, click the gear by your name, and select "notifications."
I personally find it helpful in a number of groups, particularity those which see less activity, but I can understand why someone might not want to see all discussions.
