WhenORDERED to do something you KNOW is unethical/criminal/illegal/stupid do you do it because you were ordered to or just say NO? WHY?

Are you a pushover for authority or is your integrity/honor more important and that is what sustains you and guides you? Why?

No - I couldn't... I was taught the saying 'to thine own self be true' in other words we have to live with it when we do something bad.. I couldn't do that to myself.

I've quit a couple of jobs  because of what I saw was being done or being contemplated to be done that was criminal in my opinion. I also didn't accept a couple of jobs when I looked at their books and saw how things were being done and told them how they should be done. The reception was not what I hoped for so I bailed before I was even on board. You try to do your best and sometimes make a mistake and do the wrong thing. Not intentionally. Any thoughtful and reasonable person would not KNOWINGLY engage in criminal acts, illegal acts. No matter how much money you would make. No amount of money can mitigate that. Thank you for your reply Addb! :)

I'd say no. I have my own values and I follow them.

Though part of having integrity / honour is loyalty. I wouldn't agree to serve an authority in the first place if I didn't respect its values. If I had misjudged it and later realised my mistake, I'd resign.

What I wouldn't do is promise to serve something faithfully and then betray it. Treachery is a sin not a virtue. This post was edited by Zeitgeist at January 29, 2018 12:00 PM MST
