Discussion»Statements»Rosie's Corner» Who would admit to supporting evil? Evil is seductive and it infiltrates your being so you succumb to it. Does evil ever release its grip?
Evil is often an indefinite article, sometimes it is merely a difference in position. Take murder as an example:
The killing of another human being is roundly recognized as an evil in (for example) most cultures, yet the death penalty exists, is carried out, even prescribed by “God”.
What IS evil is that which people agree is abhorrent, but like ritual sacrifice, unbelief, slavery or even eating pork, evil is not defined the same everywhere.

Aye! There's the rub. A perfect example of course is in politics. One set of beliefs sees a set of circumstances as GREAT while another views it as satanic/evil/venal/rotten/traitorous. Different people have different views based on whatever fight their dog is in at the time. And that is the problem. Self-interest is understandable...to a certain extent. You have to survive in order to do anything for others. But there is a need for going beyond self-interest sometimes/often to help those who need it. That's where the divide begins and the paths diverge and get wider apart. Sadly. I see evil in lying, cheating, betrayal, sabotaging, undermining, setting up people maliciously and attacking others viciously. Others see the same things as I do and they are part of the "we". But "the other" group disagrees vehemently and with great defiance and certitude. Rigid. Intractable. Positive. So here we are and where do we go from here? I have no idea. Thank you for your reply DonB and Happy Sunday to thee! :)
Wouldn't it be nice if everyone followed the Christian Greek scriptures? Everyone would be at peace. Although many religions kill for the reasons you say, atheist sometimes kill for other unfathomable reasons such as political, racial and nationalistic reasons.
Indeed, Texas. It would be a better situation if people could just get on the same page, agree, or simply agree to disagree. Too much blood has been shed over trifles and unjust causes.
I don't see evil as being an outside force but rather as being part of us. That part of us that is concerned with ourselves. Selfishness. Now if we are not selfish at all we will not survive but if we become too much so then we infringe upon the lives and rights of others. Which is "evil". So can be a very thin and sometimes quite indistinct line between survival and evil. When we don't think about and consider and act by how what we do will affect others then that is evil.
