Sweet Hawaiian bread is one of my favorites.  I have found that any bread thick enough to not fall apart when being toasted works best.  French bread in NOT a good candidate.
Rye bread, another of my favorites (very different than sweet hawaiin) seems to work well.
The best of all best is raisin bread if you can find it thick so it won't fall apart. :)

Whole wheat or rye with little or no sugar.  Sometime whole wheat is ruined by them adding 3g sugar per slice to the dough.
