Maybe they have no mass or are otherwise unaffected by gravity.

Or perhaps our sense perception of them do not map one to one with the mode of reality in which they exist.

(I don't want to go there, but if you believe in the Resurrection of Christ, it is said that his ability to move through solid objects is the property of a resurrected body---which may or may not give you food for thought.
And no, I am not suggesting that a ghost is a resurrected body---and I now end the analogy and will not reply to comments on "resurrection.")

Well, I caught up with my old friend Casper and asked him the exact same question.
This was his reply: "Mick, if you believe ghosts exist, then you believe I can walk on solid ground without disappearing in it. How can I do this? I can do this because I'm a ghost. And.....I just can".
And with that, he left by going through the wall.

Ghosts work by magic, and magic can do anything. They walk through walls because they think they can walk through walls and they don't fall through the flloor because they think they can stand on floors.

I think that we carry different energy.   I may be able to access capabilities in the uncorporal (word?) state that you may not be able to access.   For instance, maybe I know how to connect to 1000 different minds when I am dead.  Maybe I can affect dreams or something.  And you cannot.  You may be able to connect to other souls in the soul plane and help them acclimatize themselves to the other side.   We all have different abilities.

Therefore, it would not be such a stretch to think that maybe some ghosts can float and some can stand.  Ez.

There are odd stories of ghosts appearing to drift along a road as if wading through the ground, where the surface has become built up over the centuries since the spirits' owners' deaths.

I have heard a modern ghost-story similar to this, of footsteps heard ascending the wooden stairs of an old building now used as a caving-club's headquarters in the North of England. My informant was a club member I'd already alarmed that morning by joking about the area's old-time lead miners, while we were underground. He reckoned the footsteps reached the landing but then turned through a wall where there had once been a doorway into the club's library on the first-floor. I reckon he was the only one who'd heard the steps. The spirituous visitor?, I asked, and was told it was of a member - clearly loyal yea even post-mortem - who'd died in a road accident some years previously and before the club altered that area of the building!
