Okey dokey. Electricity goes out and your backup generator automatically clicks on*. How long does THAT last before it runs out of juice?

*I was reminded of generators by an Answermug friend. Never had one. Don't know how much they cost, how long they generate before they need more gas.

You don't charge them......mostly you put diesel in the large Kva generators and petrol in small portable generators up to about 5  Kva

How much diesel do you keep on hand to run them D? Barrels full? How long will one run on 5 gallons of  gas/diesel/petrol? How many months/years would it take to restore an electric g rid? I'm gonna ask. Thank you for your reply! :)

You need a lot of fuel to run even to run a small petrol generator Rosie...
larger diesel generators are more economic to run plus the fuel is two thirds cheaper

Depending of the load you apply to your generator effects the cost.......
to reduce running costs you can buy inverters which run off of deep cell 12/24 volt batteries that recharge automaticly when the batteries run low or the main generator starts up....
Most boats run on those systems as do large motorhomes

Wow. Makes sense sweetie. If I'm in a small one-bedroom home I'm gonna need a lot less generator performance than someone in a 10,000 square foot house. Thank you for hanging in and providing info I priorly knew nothing about. :) ((hugs))

Change all your light bulbs to low wattage LED lighting ...you will save such a lot of money...

Just  be careful to buy ones using  the Red end of the spectrum as the ones made using blue light damages skin and your eyes....

Small petrol generators up to 1kva running at half load would burn half a gallon an hour....
Much larger diesel one run on red diesel in England 1 third the cost of petrol.....Diesel generators with a big brand name would cost ten thousand pounds.....they produce 10 Kva there abouts....
    Hyundi sell a 6 Kva generator for around £ 1500 pounds....Honda equivalent would be around £ 6000

So generators aren't cheap are they? Does your family have one D? If so what's the longest you ever had to use one before electricity was restored? This post was edited by RosieG at March 3, 2018 7:15 AM MST

My dad and brothers have have quite a few and use them when far from normal electric supply's or the need for excessive cable runs....in very long cables you get a voltage drop which can damage tools and make things overheat quite quickly...
I/we have a small petrol one at home and will be buying a 6 Kva diesel one for our home.....it's rare we get really long power cuts......but fridge and freezers plus gas or oil heating won't work without some power sorce....

In London we've never had to use it where we live.....power cuts are kept quite short.....

In the country side where we are stuck at the moment because of snow drifting across roads....about two weeks ago the power was turned off to make it safe for workmen to prune trees overhanging roads where there were close to overhead power lines
