I did not see "The Shape of Water" movie but I just Googled it and read the plot. Could one species really love another species?

It seems to be that loving "one another" in our own species is often difficult to impossible.  But going outside the species to bond with an entirely different creature enough to LOVE I think couldn't happen. We LOVE our pets but not romantically. How does occur between such disparate entities? Doesn't love require commonality, understanding? I know the movie is fantasy but what is the point of it? That we should love despite appearance? We should love despite vast differences in experiences?  What is love? Empathy for another? Sympathy, acceptance?

This guy's mother was human...and don't say 'Yeah, that was science fiction.". So is the movie.

"The Shape of Water" won the  Academy Award for Best Movie Ele. Which means it touched people. What man can conceive man can achieve. My question is valid but I realize probably unanswerable. In the Star Wars movie remember the bar scene? Wonder if any of them got it on with one another? Sometimes things start out with a WHAT IF and become reality. One cannot possibly know all the potentialities of all the WHAT IFS. I'm just sayin'. Thank you for your reply and Happy 'Wednesday. Wasn't there a movie where a guy fell in love with a mermaid? I think Darryl Hannah was the mermaid. Suspension of disbelief is what it takes to really enjoy some things. I am very good at that. :) I enjoy the he** out of many things.
