The last line of the Declaration of Independence is stated below. We haven't kept that pledge. Why?

"And for the support of this Declaration, with the firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor" .

  • The people of the U.S. never made that pledge. "We" refers to signatories of the declaration trusting in God to protect them from the vengeance of European elites and devoting themselves completely to cause to U.S. independence.

    "We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America.............

    And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor."
