Darn good question.  I guess it's why they call it an earworm.

A bad earworm can be persistent..try playing a favorite song and hum or sing along with it to replace the bad one.

Earworms are usually incomplete songs/melodies (meaning it's missing a phrase, stanza, note, etc.).  Your brain wants to complete it, so it runs over and over in your head until it's completed or something else takes its place.  Try running the ENTIRE song through your head - lyrics and melody (look up the lyrics if need be).  (Of course that's not easy to do with a song you can't place). That should make it "pass" like a normal thought.

  • It's a outlet mall commercial jingle I have stuck in my head.  It's been in there for the past 2 days.  At least you get a whole song.  I get the same five words over and over. This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at March 29, 2018 3:28 PM MDT
