I have always thought it a hoot that every few years the TSHTF forums get this list of FEMA sites where supposedly they are going to imprison citizens. They always mention "MCAS in Arizona". That is four miles from me, and it is also called "Yuma International Airport".
Life was a lot more thrilling back when there was a drive-in theater beside the runway!
LAX runways are east and west. I live to the north and can barely hear the planes. I used to live in Lennox though, which is right under the flight path and they'd come over at about a hundred feet. Funny to watch. A couple of neighbors would be "talking over the fence" kind of thing and as the plane would get close enough ... they'd both just stop talking and wait until it passed. Like a neighborhood agreement or something.
The closest airport from me is a municipal airport but all it has are two grass runways and a shed at the end of a dirt road. It's 9 miles away. The closest airport that has passenger service is 40 miles away.
