It's always been there, a side-effect of natural selection that has persisted to keep the successful populations alive. It's only recently people are becoming aware that there is choice in that kind of behavior. Until there is equality there will always be competition, and equality is still a dream. I find it disgusting, myself, but I don't see it going away anytime soon.

It started with dominance behavior (observable in many species).

It expanded as proto-humans started specializing their labors (some hunted, some gathered, some tended children, etc.)

It really kicked into high gear with the invention of fixed-plot agriculture, because that required the invention of organizational bureaurcracy and some form of standing military.

And so long as special privilege improves one's access to resources and mating opportunities, it will continue to be a part of human behavior.

Some banks have "preferred customer" lines. At least that was true years ago at a bank I frequented. For whatever reason a teller told me one day that I was a "preferred" customer and at any time I could go up to that window and not wait in line. I was shocked. It wasn't labeled or identified at all. I had seen people go up to it when there was no teller there and a teller would magically appear.  But I thought it was the "commercial business" line where business folks would go which makes sense to  me. Sometimes they could take awhile because there were so many things they had to do. Anyway I never went to that "magic" window. I like to take a number...take my turn. That's only fair. First come first served. What's wrong with that? They also have a window where people who are physically disabled can sit down in a chair because they are unable to stand for long.  That makes sense too. If someone is physically disabled he/she should be accommodated. Otherwise no.  Favoritism is not my favorite thing. I'm glad it isn't yours either.  Thank you for your thoughtful reply and Happy Tuesday lovely! :)
