No, in the end the thugs and criminals will win hands down. That element of society will never stop committing crimes nor will they voluntarily give up guns gained by a variety of illegal means. What you don't seem to grasp, is that punishing and penalizing the law abiding doesn't put a dent into terror and lawlessness. but then, could it possibly be that therein lies the true motivation? The creation of another overwhelming problem requiring more governmental dependence, intervention and control?
Nope. Historical evidence shows that the armed government turns on the unarmed (or under-armed) citizens.
If you wish to ignore the evidence of Russia, China, Germany, Turkey, etc ... you can find it closer to home, in America. Our nation has a LONG history of the government using military force against civilians ... going back to George Washington using the military to disband a peaceful protest by war veterans.
