    Back in the old days, those people were often locked up and hidden from public eye. Also, the population is much larger than ever before.

    I believe there are several factors that contribute; including, but not limited to:

    - greed of pharmaceutical companies 
    - chemical and genetic modification of food
    - mutation of human genes due to environmental influences
    -governmental policies
    -media influences
    -scientific research and data
