Discussion»Statements»Rosie's Corner» Are rednecks hillbillies and vicey versey? If not what are they then? Hill people? Mountain folk? Valley dwellers?
Jeff Foxworthy advertised his redneckness. Haven't heard anything about him late. I always thought he was hugely funny! Thank you for your reply m2c and Happy Sunday to thee. Someone said that y'all are called "rednecks" because your necks get sunburned. Is that true? What about the rest of you? Doesn't all of you get sunburned? Why redneck and redface or redfoot or redhand or redarm? Inquiring minds wanna know these things! :)
Yes, I believe the sunburnt neck is how the term came about. Working on a farm you neck is exposed more than just being outside...so many times just your neck is burnt and not your face....often have a hat on for shade etc. As for red foot etc....we wear clothes. Just think of working in your garden. Out there with your shovel/hoe, you are bent over with your neck exposed and face to the ground.
Exactly you win the prize - which is a link to a youtube video of some hillbilly's living it up on Vancouver Island their also a Jug band and since it's the weekend I thought I would share. Cheers and happy weekend!
I've never really known what a redneck is.. I have come to believe it's often used in a derogatory way - people can tend to call others it. But beyond a few stereotypes, along the lines of that rednecks are inbred, that they are not very bright in terms of intelligence - I really have no idea..
Hillbillies, I imagine them to be mountain folk - I have a picture in my head of them making moonshine and generally being fairly harmless - but again I don't know much about it.
They are the same....but hillbillies live in the hills/mountains. Both are used as an insult but generally hillbilly is considered less derogatory. Now many of us....rural (country folk), blue collar workers have taken a liking to calling ourselves redneck. (as you see above) I believe it orginated with outside workers get burnt on the back of the neck and sometimes using the old red bandana to prevent the sunburn. So literally a redneck.
I don't use the term derogatorily at all Addb. In fact one of my favorite comedians is a guy named Jeff Foxworthy who proudly labels himself a redneck. Just so's ya know. Thank you for your reply and Happy Wednesday to thee! :)
No. the term "redneck" was once used for perceived ignorant southern folk. The people turned it around and began to take pride in labelling themselves as that so it became a positive designation. I have southern family some of whom we always thought of as rednecks and others of whom are now proud to think of themselves as rednecks. They don't have to live in the mountains at all. Pretty much now a designation people take for themselves.
