    This isn’t entirely true. Not every citizen pays taxes. One has to have income or taxable assets, and not everyone does. 

    Prisoners, children, tax-exempt clergy, homeless and unemployed people, mobsters, and tax evaders are all citizens too, and are among those who escape this predicament. This post was edited by Don Barzini at June 19, 2018 6:45 AM MDT

    Will Rogers has some great quotes ... but this one is wrong.
    In 1835-1836, the US debt was about zero.

    It was almost paid off, just before WW1.

    You notice the shift?
    We went from having a debt to pay for war ... which we attempted to pay off ... to a continuing debt just to operate on a daily basis.

    Again, we need fewer lawyers in government and more bookkeepers.
