Definitely.
Much as I hate using weedicides, I must because of the magnitude of the land area and the speed of growth. My ability to recognise categories is the only way to use the least poison with most effect on the weed and least on the environment - so here the categories include the species of plant, chemical, weather, time of day and year, quantity and method. Categories are the workman's toolbox.
In writing, if I understand the categories of point-of-view and distance in time and space, I have better choices for fictional effect. If I can reckon the various different ways punctuation can work, I have more freedom in developing style and expression. If I grok categories of human emotion, character, motivation, and ethics, I can turn a character's development upon each word and each event. If I have lexicons for my topics and themes, I can play with words. Categories are an artist's palette.
