What is the best/worst outcome of the politics of our time? What do you HOPE to experience and what do you DREAD more than anything?

I hope they can clean up the national debt. Hey, I've been paying off my mortgage, but politicians on both sides are busy with their 'programs' that seem to be heading us towards national bankrupcy.

Republicans are supposedly fiscally responsible. Not as far as I can see. Another lie. Thank you for your reply bh. Along with the lies about Family first. :(

I don't really like the use of the word 'lie'. These people in Congress abuse much of the English language in order to twist their agenda. It's sort of 'lawyer talk'.

The Republicans talked a good game in the run-up to the election about how much the national debt increased under Obama and then went and did the very same thing themselves in addition to lowering taxes.  You don't have to be a Harvard economist to know that if you decrease revenue (taxes) and increase spending, you're going to wind up in a financial hole.

They keep selling what doesn't work, never has, never will. That doesn't surprise. What does is that there are so many buyers of what the liars have to sell.  Are Americans really that ignorant/simpleminded? Millions of them? How do they navigate through life? It is very perplexing to me that such a thing can be but there it is! You cannot argue with success and King don and his method of ruling is working. Based on lies lies lies lies lies lies lies that his followers buy. Repeatedly. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me can explain away the mystery of it.  The more I try the less I understand. :( Thank you for your reply L. :) This post was edited by RosieG at June 26, 2018 1:43 PM MDT

I know what you mean.  I'm as perplexed as you are.  Reagan tried the tax cut and spend and we wound up in a recession.  Now Trump will be going after Harley Davidson.  He's threatened to tax them like never before.  Does he think he can do that all by himself?  Does he not realize that Congress is responsible for taxes?  Doesn't he realize that he can't tax just one company - he either taxes them all or none?  If he's so concerned about American companies manufacturing their goods/products overseas, why doesn't he bring his own manufacturing to the states?

It will not happen in any of our lifetimes.  For one thing, the rate at which interest accrues on it is enormous, the payments made on it  are a pittance, the amount of money we keep borrowing is unending  and cutting taxes and raising the debt ceiling will insure that we never become debt free.

Not to mention the very unpopular austerity policies you'd need to make it happen. Economically everything would grind to a halt.

Precisely.  We would have to literally turn ourselves into paupers eating dirt.

Britain leaving the (corrupt and antidemocratic) EU is one of the best. Unfortunately, the negotiation and preparation for it happening is the worst. I hope we get out properly, but I fear we shall be stuck half-in half-out.
