Are people who are obsessed with a public figure to the point of mental illness actually show they are infatuated by them or more?

When people are obsessed with anything it may be considered a mental issue.  What gets me is they can't change that person.  People may not agree or like his choices.  It is healthy to voice how they feel but to obsess and waste their own life over someone else's judgments and choices is a total waste of their own.  Obviously this is just my opinion, but still.  People will find something wrong with anybody within earshot.
