Don't you think IT people should be allowed to punch stupid people?

"Don't accuse me of not knowing what I'm doing again. You notice how when you explained how you wanted the system to work I told you exactly how you'd have to set it up and what it would cost?  That means I know exactly what I'm doing.  Just because you don't like the price you were quoted does not mean you can accuse me of lacking proficiency and insult me to my face."

Sure!  That sounds like a great idea...

...And doctors should be allowed to punch their patients.

...And lawyers should be allowed to punch their clients.

...And cops should be able to punch...well...just about everyone else.

Point being, if you grant a punching license to those in possession of comparatively greater knowledge, there's gonna be a whole LOT of punchin' goin' on!

Or maybe you could just not take the job, that's always an option. You don't have to perform for anyone.

    Punching requires effort...

    Yeah.  There is that.  :-)

Still, as a former IT 'professional' I can kinda sorta relate to having the urge.  It's not the ones who honestly don't know what they're doing who drive me nuts.  Their mistakes are actually understandable all be them infrequently huge ones.  No, it's the walking penises who deliberately IGNORE what you tell them, and screw up royal on account of it, and THEN have the audacity to blame YOU for the screw-up. THOSE are the ones I wanna punch!

I can totally relate to that... Unheeded instruction isn't something I deal with well either. That's one of my pet peeves.

The other thing that irritates me is  how some people don't seem to understand the difference between hardware and software problems, as in:

"When your computer doesn't turn on at all like that it's usually the power supply."

"You mean I have to install updates?"

"No, this part at the back of the machine where the power cord goes in appears to be dead.  This part has to be taken out of the machine and replaced."

"You mean I have to download something?"

"No, I'll see if I can grab a replacement from one of our mothballed machines, and if I can find one with similar specs I can swap it out for you."

"You know one time I downloaded an e-mail that had this attachment, and I got a computer virus.  Is this the same sort of thing?"

"Just wait here" (walks away and curses out co-worker under my breath).
