What is the point of exit interviews by employers? Are they even worth the time?

I know someone who recently found a better job and turned in his two-week notice from his employer. They wanted to schedule an exit interview. He declined by telling Human Resources (paraphrased), “You all have ignored my suggestions and legitimate grievances for my entire employment. Why should I begin to have any faith you care what I have to say now? If you truly care you would have listened to me a long time ago. I’m not wasting my time.”

  • The purpose of this exit interview is to gain feedback from employees in order to improve aspects of the organization, better retain employees, and reduce turnover.

    For my particular circumstances, working in a company that did a lot of government contracts and holding a security clearance for same, there was a "debriefing" interview that informed the former employee of the disclosure rules of secured information.

    Thanks for your reply and info. I believe in my friend’s case it isn’t for feedback. His soon to be ex employer never listened to him before. I feel if an employer and supervisors actually care they would listen to, take suggestions from, and speak with employees during their employment, not waiting until they leave.

    There is not a legitimate one.  I think anyone who participates in one is a fool.  I would simply decline and give no reason.  Your friend is correct in his premise that his employer never asked for feedback from its employees.  I know why they don't do that....it's risky, however, it is the best way to gauge your employees' actual work experience.  Talking one on one at the performance review meeting is not the time for this.
