For those of you familiar with early to mid 1900, what does 'art is a vulgar trade' mean?

Are performers seen as of low social class? What would be considered upper class?

There is this period drama (1940s or 50s) I am watching on this man who wanted to be an onscreen performer. And the master said to him 'what does a respectable man like you want to involve in the vulgar arts'? It alludes to entertaining itself is seen as low class (singers, actors and the like).
