Thank you for your reply JA. I totally disagree with everything you said. It happens. H
appy Friday.
When you lie and screw up badly and show disrespect for a host nation and disrespect yourself and your country which what Lochte did you would not apologize? Seriously? Thank you for your reply BSurf. It has nothing to do with being politically correct. It has to with honor/integrity/telling the truth. Why you can't see that i have no idea. Thank you for your reply.
Hey there Rosie
I ll have to retract the first sentence in my comment to J.A.
I have to admit I have not watched any of the Olympics. The games no longer hold the prestige I once had for them.
I have seen pieces of the Olympics while out and about, I saw such events as Golf, synchronized diving, kayaking and beach volleyball. As entertaining as these may have been, they just don't scream "Olympics" to me as the more traditional events. That being said......
I still expect the chosen few to behave in a manner which represents the values of the country from which they come, especially when its my country. My counties value's do not include pi^^ing all over your neighbors floor.
Why do I say that, because instead of staying and defending their honor, they left as soon as they could. I am quite sure that during all those years of dedication they didn't think to aspire to this current situation, where they left in shame before concluding the course of the spectacle, the closing ceremonies....
These Athlete's were guests in another country. A country that may have different ideas of justice than we have here.
They should have been on their best behavior. They should have been an example of honor and dignity and sportsmanship and not a subject of contempt.
There is no qualifier for that behavior, there is no "But........" . Does the fact that they were held at gunpoint until "justice" was reached diminish their actions, I say No it doesn't.
They were not killed, they were not arrested, at the time. They were made to pay for the damages and then released. It could have ended there..but THEY dug the hole deeper by then lying.
We here expect our guests to respect our laws and our home. we do we offer excuse when we fail to offer that same respect for others...
Is my understanding that he didn't apologize for his actions but only offered deferment of guilt to those who were "distracted" correct. I would expect as much from a person who would trash a place which was not his to trash....
No, a twitter tweet is not enough. There is sacrifice in that.
They should all hop on the next flight to Rio, turn themselves over for questioning They should show some humility and beg the forgiveness of the Brazilian people. They should personally repair any and all damage they caused to the station, if repairs have already been made, do something to improve it....
They should encourage the use of themselves as an example to the consequences of getting stupid drunk...
They should stay through the closing ceremonies, on the sidelines to at least show support to those who did behave with honor ..
That would be an example of character equal to the character they showed to achieve the goal of going to the Olympics...
.. But you're still assuming he's guilty of something. We have no evidence to show that he caused any damage or that he was drunk. It's just a lot of people telling stories right now.
*If* he is guilty of disturbing the peace and destroying property, I agree with you. He should ask for forgiveness and show genuine concern for what he's done. I'd rather wait for evidence to prove what was done before jumping to that conclusion.
The 4 are disgusting. The defenders are disgusting. I have no use for the lot of them. I am furious and angry and upset and disappointed in those who commited the egregious offence (LYING and VANDALIZING and COVERING UP) and those who defend them. Shame on all of them. Shame shame shame shame shame. I don't know when or if I will get past this. It is embarrassing and disgusting and humliating and shameful. Those who think otherwise? Well Ugly American comes to mind. Thank you for your reply MrWitch. This is the problem with Americans, Some of them

defend the bad guys . Go figger! :(
Hello again J.A.
Yes, I have heard the stories. I have travelled to South America quite a few times. One time spending 2 weeks backpacking the mountains of Peru. I know when I visit there that if I show an appreciation for the culture and respect for their people, I will treated as a friend. However, If I disrespect them, I know judgment maybe a little harsher then what I might expect at home.
This IS Brazil, who certainly do not have the resources that we have here to build the infrastructure required to host this event..I am not surprised that the lack of resources resulted in some severe failures.
Despite the petty street crime, which is certainly not limited to th streets of Rio, I haven't heard reports of violent crime in Rio. Brazil is one of those countries where the discovery of a body part or two is not uncommon. but again, I haven't heard of ant missing tourists or athlete's.
Thousands of people have not felt the need to leave Rio in fear of their safety, Any fear they may have had would be fear of retaliation and not randomness...
Yes, the statement is both counterintuitive and counter productive, as there is nothing they can do to fix that...
They can however strive to repair their image...
Oh my gosh ozgirl. You just NAILED it in 5 words! How the heck did you do that? Thank you m'dear and Happy Friday! :)

He apologized today m2c. You might deign
to ask him why since you seem to be so certain he has nothing to apologize for. Thank you for your reply.
He APOLOGIZED JA. ARe you in the habit of apologizing if/when you have done nothing wrong and are guilty of nothing? He apologized. Why? Just for the he** of it? Just to placate folks li
ke me since folks like you clearly see no problem there? I dunno. I see it so differently from you and those like you. This is the problem with Americans. We do not relate to one another at all . Sad that. Thank you for your reply.
I did not say he had nothing to apologized for. I said if they were drunk....(maybe they should...they are not underage so not sure they have to unless there is rules they agreed to when they made the team) And yes they should IF they damaged the property. (bathrooom door etc)
I am simply saying the were robbed. The security at the station pointed a gun at them and would not let them leave until they gave money. Here that is armed robbery. I have a business. If someone comes in and breaks something, I cannot get my gun out and tell them to give me money. That is not how things work.
Lochte apologized for what?....his behavior and being a distraction from the games. (He did not specify what that behavior was) He also restated that they did indeed have a gun pointed at them and money was demanded..... I have an issue with that. I don't understand anyone not having an issue with that.
Why apologize. It's the truth. Sometimes politically correct just sucks, lol.
Who says he's hiding? Right now, he has only apologized for his words and for taking focus off the olympics. Reports about what happened vary widely. Rio is saying they "vandalized" a bathroom. Other reports are saying they broke the door so they could use a bathroom. We don't know what damage they did, if any. Their report was that they were robbed at gunpoint. Even if it was a "security guard" who did it and demanded cash from them, that's still robbery at gunpoint by American standards. You just don't do that.
Ryan Lochte is not a celebrity. I doubt he has reputation managers or PR staff or anything. For the most part, he's an average guy. Why would you expect an average person to call a press conference and make an official statement? Do you go on camera to apologize? I wouldn't. That's not what normal people do. Moreover, he didn't give any real kind of apology. He just said he picked the wrong words and took the focus off the olympics. Even if he reaches celebrity status in your mind, to the point where apologies need to be public, is it really worth holding a press conference to say "I used the wrong words. Sorry."

Hi Rosie...I just answered another question of yours on this, so I wont answer here...
Hello there Just Asking..
With all due respect, may I offer a different perspective.
I think he is hiding. He has left Rio before the games are over. he will miss the closing ceremony. Why would he do this. He is a gold medal winner who will now miss what should be an incredible experience. If his intention and behavior were honorable, why would he not stay and defend his actions.
He is a celebrity, if not before the event, he most certainly is now. Infamous is still famous.
He chose to put himself on the worlds stage. He devoted himself to it, undoubtedly putting in countless hours of practice and dedication and sacrifice to achieve this goal. Surely he was aware of the awesomeness of it all. Once the eyes of the world are upon you in an arena which is built on excellence, you are no longer average. The average doesn't have the extraordinary, the average haven't participated in the Olympics, let alone won a gold medal. His err's were committed on the worlds stage, which he willingly stepped upon, His repentance then it seems, should be on that same stage...
Why would he apologize? For being drunk...maybe. For any damage to the bathroom door...maybe.
But the swimmer's were robbed by the security at the station. You don't get to point a gun at people and demand money, that is called robbery. And that is what happened. At least according to the civil police chief in Rio.
Have you read about what it's like in Rio? http://www.cnn.com/2016/06/30/americas/rio-olympics-body-parts-found/ I'd get the heck out of there, too. Leaving Rio doesn't mean he's hiding. It means he went home, where it's safe. (usually)
Perhaps if it comes down to it and it is determined that he lied, I could understand a public apology. Right now, he's apologizing for taking attention away from the Olympics. That's it. Holding a press conference to say "Sorry for taking attention away from the Olympics" is a little counterintuitive, no?
