Unless, of course, one roots for the NL team because it's the national thing to do.

I have little interest in baseball and if the Yankees aren't involved, I have no interest at all.  Sorry.

No worries L. As a Californian of course I support the Dodgers. HOWEVER I lived in Massachusetts for 5 years. My son was born there. I was privileged to be there in the era of Bobby Orr on the Boston Bruins hockey team.  I developed a real fondness for the Boston Celtics and adored Larry Bird. Of course I'm thrilled when the Red Sox are doing well. And I cheer for the Patriots as well so I'm kinda torn here this year. Actually I can't lose. Whichever team wins will be jolly fine for me. Thank you for your reply! :) This post was edited by RosieG at October 22, 2018 4:30 PM MDT

I hope whichever team wins, you're happy.  Just remember, the Dodgers started out in Brooklyn. :)  Happy Monday. :)

Indeed. The former site of Ebbets Field, at Bedford Avenue and Sullivan Street, is next to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and less than two miles across Prospect Park from my house.

If I'm not mistaken, for a while after they moved to CA, the continued to call themselves the Brooklyn Dodgers.

No. They moved west in 1958 and immediately became the LA Dodgers.

Are you sure about that?  I thought they moved to LA later than that.

EDIT:  I stand corrected.  They did move that early.  Thanks. This post was edited by SpunkySenior at October 22, 2018 4:30 PM MDT

Feel free to sit corrected and take a load off, lol. You may have been thinking of when they moved into Dodger Stadium, which was 1962. They played at the LA Coliseum from 1958-61.

I do remember that L. I don't hold it against the Dodgers that they started out in Brooklyn!  Just kidding! The L.A. Lakers started out in Minnesota I think...The Land of 10,000 lakes. And my son's very favorite baseball player was Lou Gehrig. When Gehrig's widow wrote a book about him my kid wrote her a fan letter about her husband and got a reply! And of course the movie with Gary Cooper was beyond moving and splendid. Lou was a Yankee wasn't he? Have the Yankees always been in New York or did they start out someplace else first? Thank you for your reply and the Happy Monday m'dear! :)

Nice story.  I'm pretty sure Lou Gehrig was a Yankee and I'm pretty the Yankees have always been a New York team.  Happy Monday. :)

To answer your question, Rosie, the Yankees started as the Baltimore Orioles (no connection to the current Baltimore franchise) in the American League in 1901. After two seasons in Baltimore, the franchise was sold and moved to New York in 1903, being renamed the New York Highlanders because they played at Hilltop Park, which was in Washington Heights at Manhattan's highest elevation. They moved to the Polo Grounds in 1913 and were renamed the Yankees. They shared the Polo Grounds (in upper Manhattan) with the New York Giants for 10 seasons before moving just across the Harlem River to the Bronx and opening the original Yankee Stadium in 1923.

This photo shows how close the two parks were from 1923 until the Polo Grounds (at left) was demolished after the Mets movedfrom there to Shea Stadium in 1964.

Thank you for your reply m2c and Happy Monday to thee. I really don't care which one wins. I lived in Massachusetts for 5 years and my son was born there. So Dodgers or Red Sox...either way I win! :) This post was edited by RosieG at October 22, 2018 4:57 AM MDT

I honestly don't give a rat's a$$ - I care less for baseball than you do for cricket. I also fail to see how a competition which only includes teams from one nation can be a "World" Series.

Although MLB also has a franchise in Canada. And World Series is merely the name of the event, not a political statement.

I don't have a rooting interest, but I believe the Red Sawx are the best team this year and they will win. But anything can happen, and that's why the games are played. This post was edited by Stu Spelling Bee at October 22, 2018 7:51 AM MDT
