Has any prez ever visited the troops at a battlefield? Has the john of don visited any troops on foreign soil YET? When and where?

If not why not?

Madison ... well, he went to the front when the British were attacking towards Washington DC in the War of 1812.  It convinced him the British were a greater threat than he had believed, and prompted him to warn his wife to be ready to evacuate.

Lincoln was in Ft Stevens (one of the fortifications around Washington DC) during the Civil War, while it was under attack by the Confederacy.

Eisenhower flew over the front lines of Korea ... and it helped him decide the stalemate was unacceptable, and to start armistice process.

Johnson's trip to VietNam wasn't on the front lines, but it pretty much set the public's expectation that Presidents would visit the troops of war zones.

Trump has not visited any, to date.

To be fair, the reaction of the actual troops are split.  While many appreciate the gesture, many also see it as nothing other than a PR gimmick and a waste of resources. This post was edited by Walt O'Reagun at November 21, 2018 5:23 PM MST

Thank you for replying to my question with so much useful information Walt. I appreciate it. Like when a prez visits a tragedy they are a pain in the a** because traffic has to be rerouted and it is a bigly inconvenience to the residents who are already in dire straits. So other presidents have used tragedy for photo ops? Not just the infamous john of don? Good to know but sad too. I'd rather have only one jacka** to kick around. We got more? Seriously?  :( This post was edited by RosieG at November 21, 2018 1:45 PM MST

Johnson was really the first to use it solely for public relations.
The others were really to get first-hand knowledge of the situation.
Eisenhower actually ran on the "plank" of going to Korea to get first-hand knowledge, in order to decide how to proceed.

    The British were a threat?

They ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles
They ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go
They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em
All down  the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico This post was edited by Slartibartfast at November 22, 2018 3:55 AM MST

Oh my gosh he was one of our own. Born in Los Angeles in 1925 and died in 1960. A honky tonk singer very highly regarded. So now I know. I thought he was an Aussie. Shows ya how much I know about Country Western honky tonk stars. Thanks Sbf! This post was edited by RosieG at November 22, 2018 4:56 AM MST
