  • It varies .. Each year they test them and give the results which you can access on line ... The last two years defender hasn't been that good, but it is free ... I use Kapersky as over the last few years it comes out on top with little overhead on your system :)

I used AVG for years, and it seemed to work OK. But I haven't used it lately.

Ohhh, well if you liked it, you could always uninstall the one that came with the PC, and download the free version.

I use a combination of Circumspection 1.0 and Windows Security Essentials.  I have Win7 on all my machines, but these programs would work just as well on 10. :-^)

FWIW, I once ran a computer for five YEARS with no anti-virus/firewall protection at all and encountered no problems whatsoever.  Guess how?

Hi.  The built-in one is just fine for most people if you don't do silly things are you aren't a target.  And it is free, and it is not very annoying. Norton and Mcafee can be annoying.

No virus scanner alone is going to be effective ,you need to combine with taking care to not do silly things. It is better to have a user who has security on his mind and no scanner, than a user who does not care and the most expensive scanner.  Businesses with scanners all the time are infected, and now with ransomeware, because their users screwed up.  I see it every week.
